Above is a healthy young tree planted as a memorial in one of Janesville's city parks. It shows how we treat the trees we plant as memorials. They are tied back for the first year for stability, after which the tie-backs are removed. A collar is wrapped around the tender young trunk to prevent damage during the first year. It is removed the second year. The trees are mulched to help them retain moisture as they put down their first new roots. City staff makes sure the young tree is watered when necessary. In front of the tree is a personalized plaque set into a heavy concrete base that is nearly impossible to dislodge. We work with individuals and families to find appropriate locations for their trees and offer advice on species when asked. The tree in the photo is a swamp white oak.
